QR codes are everywhere in India - Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay use them for UPI payments; restaurant menus print them; metro tickets carry them; product packaging uses them for verification; and even local kirana stores have QR stickers for digital payments. A QR code is just a way to encode short text (up to a few thousand characters) into a square pattern that any smartphone camera can read in a fraction of a second. QR codes encode text into a two-dimensional pattern that scanners can decode. URL and text QR codes store exactly what you enter. Wi-Fi QR codes use the WIFI:T:...;S:...;P:...;; format supported by most Android and iOS cameras. UPI QR codes use the upi://pay URI format used by Indian payment apps.

A QR (Quick Response) code is a 2D barcode invented by Denso Wave in 1994. It encodes text in a square matrix of black and white modules. Modern QR scanners - including every smartphone camera and most barcode scanners - read it instantly by detecting the three position markers (top-left, top-right, bottom-left squares) and decoding the data between them.
Error correction (ECC) lets a QR code remain readable even when partially damaged or obscured by a logo. Four levels: L (~7% recoverable), M (~15%, default), Q (~25%), H (~30%). Higher levels make the QR denser (more modules per side) but more resilient. Use H if you plan to overlay a logo, print on flexible/foldable material, or expect wear and tear. Use M for most everyday cases.
Specific format strings: Wi-Fi QR uses WIFI:T:WPA;S:<SSID>;P:<password>;; (T = security type WEP/WPA/nopass). UPI QR uses upi://pay?pa=<vpa>&pn=<name>&am=<amount>&cu=INR - recognized by all Indian UPI apps. Plain URL or text uses no special prefix; scanners detect URLs starting with http:// or https:// and offer to open them; plain text shows up as text to copy.
