Entender: Mulch Calculator

Mulching is the single most cost-effective gardening practice you can adopt in Indian conditions. A 2-3 inch layer of mulch on flower beds, vegetable patches, lawn edges, terrace gardens, and around tree bases reduces irrigation water needs by 40-60%, suppresses weed germination, keeps soil temperature stable through harsh Indian summers, and slowly enriches soil as it decomposes. For urban Indian gardeners on terraces and balconies, mulch makes the difference between thriving plants in May-June heat and a dead garden. For farmers, mulching cuts manual weeding labour and locks in monsoon moisture for the dry months.

This calculator converts your garden bed area and target depth into volume - in cubic feet, cubic yards (the US trade unit), and the number of standard 2 cu ft or 3 cu ft retail bags. For Indian users, common mulch options include cocopeat/coir (excellent moisture retention, widely available in Indian nurseries), shredded coconut husk, dried sugarcane bagasse, wood bark, leaf litter, paddy straw (very common in North India), and commercial wood chip mulch. Each type lasts 6-18 months depending on decomposition rate. The calculation is the same regardless of mulch type - only the bag size and pricing differ.

Cómo usar

Cómo usar Mulch Calculator en 3 pasos

  1. Enter the area in square feet.

  2. Enter desired depth (typically 2-4 inches).

  3. Read cubic feet, cubic yards and bag counts (2 cu ft and 3 cu ft sizes).

La fórmula

Cómo funciona Mulch Calculator

Volume = area × depth (with depth converted from inches to feet). Cubic yards = cubic feet / 27. Standard bag sizes: 2 cu ft and 3 cu ft.

Formula

Volume (cu ft) = Area × Depth(in) / 12 Cubic yards = cu ft / 27

Las matemáticas

Cómo obtiene Mulch Calculator su resultado

Volume = area × depth, with units consistent. If area is in square feet and you want volume in cubic feet, convert depth from inches to feet first (depth_inches / 12). So for a 100 sq ft bed at 3 inch depth: volume = 100 × (3/12) = 25 cu ft. For metric users in India: area in sq m × depth in m = volume in cu m. 100 sq ft ≈ 9.29 sq m; 3 inches ≈ 0.0762 m; so 9.29 × 0.0762 = 0.71 cu m.

Bag count: divide total volume by bag size. A 2 cu ft bag (most common retail size, costs around ₹250-400 for cocopeat in India) covers 12 sq ft at 2 inch depth or 8 sq ft at 3 inch depth. A 3 cu ft bag covers proportionally more. For bulk delivery (truckload mulch for landscaping projects), volume is typically quoted in cubic yards (1 cu yd = 27 cu ft, enough for about 100 sq ft at 3 inch depth).

Depth selection by use case: 2 inches for annual flower beds and seasonal vegetables (allows new growth to push through). 3 inches for perennials, shrubs, and rose beds (good weed suppression). 4 inches under mature trees (long-term moisture retention). Never exceed 4 inches against plant stems - too thick suffocates roots and invites fungus, especially in Indian humidity. Keep a 2-inch gap around tree trunks to prevent bark rot.

Ejemplos

Ejemplos resueltos

Terrace garden: 200 sq ft area at 2 inch cocopeat depth

Volume = 200 × 2/12 = 33.3 cu ft = 1.23 cu yd. Bags needed: 33.3/2 = 17 bags (2 cu ft cocopeat ≈ ₹300 each in 2026 prices) = ₹5,100. Lasts 6-9 months; refresh annually.

Front lawn flower bed strip: 50 ft long × 4 ft wide × 3 in depth

Area 200 sq ft. Volume = 200 × 3/12 = 50 cu ft = 1.85 cu yd. Bags = 25 (2 cu ft) or 17 (3 cu ft). For bark mulch in India: ₹400-600 per bag.

Tree bases: 6 trees, 4 ft radius circle each, 4 inch depth

Per tree: π×4² = 50 sq ft. ×6 = 300 sq ft. Volume = 300 × 4/12 = 100 cu ft = 3.7 cu yd. Order bulk delivery for cost savings vs bags.

Casos de uso

Cuándo usar Mulch Calculator

  • Terrace and rooftop garden mulching.
  • Apartment balcony vegetable and herb beds.
  • Independent house garden flower beds.
  • Farm and orchard moisture conservation.
  • Lawn edge and tree base mulching.
  • Vegetable patch - kitchen garden moisture retention.
  • Commercial landscape maintenance.
  • Monsoon prep - straw mulch before rains.
Cuidado

Errores y trampas habituales

  • Applying mulch too thickly (>4 inches) - suffocates roots.
  • Mulching against tree trunks - causes bark rot.
  • Skipping mulch refresh - most decompose in 6-12 months.
  • Using fresh wood chips on annuals - temporarily depletes soil nitrogen.
  • Forgetting to compute volume from area and depth - buying by bag without volume math.
Consejos

Saca más partido a esta herramienta

  • Cocopeat is the most popular Indian mulch - widely available, holds 7-10× its weight in water.
  • Apply mulch after the bed is moist (post-watering or rain) to lock in moisture.
  • For organic mulches, refresh annually; for inorganic (gravel, pebbles), once is enough.
  • Order bulk truckload for projects over 1 cubic yard - significantly cheaper than bags.
  • Pair with the gravel, area and paint calculators for full landscaping planning.
Preguntas frecuentes

Preguntas sobre Mulch Calculator

Recommended depth?

2 inches for annuals/flower beds. 3 inches for perennials and shrubs. 4 inches under trees. Too thick smothers roots.

How often to refresh?

Top up annually - most mulch decomposes in 6-12 months. Cedar and pine bark last longer.

Cocopeat / coir vs wood mulch?

Coir holds water better and is renewable. Wood mulch suppresses weeds longer. Both work - match the climate and bed type.

How big a bag covers what?

A 2 cu ft bag covers ~12 sq ft at 2" depth or ~8 sq ft at 3" depth. Multiply your total area by depth (in feet) to convert.

Plan home projects without overshooting

Renovating, decorating or estimating utilities at home almost always reduces to three numbers - area, volume, and cost. Get any of them wrong by 10% and you're either short of paint and tile, or you've over-ordered and have to return material. This calculator uses the same wastage allowances, packing rules and unit conversions that contractors and material suppliers actually use in India.

Use it together with the paint, tile, electricity bill and BTU calculators to plan a complete renovation budget. Indian states have very different electricity tariffs and material prices, so the calculators expose state-wise tariffs (Maharashtra MSEDCL, Tamil Nadu TANGEDCO, Delhi BSES, Karnataka BESCOM, etc.) and let you override defaults to match your supplier's pricing.
