This uses a level monthly contribution and a constant annual return compounded monthly - a planning shortcut, not a PFRDA official calculator. Real NPS returns vary by scheme (E / C / G / Auto), charges, and market cycles.

At retirement, NPS normally requires partial annuitisation; lump withdrawal rules depend on corpus size and regulations in force at that time.

Not affiliated with NSDL / Karvy / PFRDA. Tax benefits (80CCD), partial withdrawal rules, and annuity purchase are not modelled here - verify with your nodal office or a qualified advisor.

Comprendre : NPS Calculator

The National Pension System is the cleanest retirement product the Indian government has ever launched. It's market-linked, low-cost (one of the lowest expense ratios of any pension product in the world at 0.01-0.09%), portable across jobs and locations, and stacks neatly on top of your existing 80C limit through a separate ₹50,000 deduction under 80CCD(1B). For salaried employees in higher tax brackets, NPS is one of the few remaining ways to legally reduce taxable income beyond 80C.

This calculator implements the standard NPS projection used by PFRDA-authorised tools and corporate HR portals. You input monthly contribution, expected blended return (typically 9-11% for an aggressive Tier-1 account), and retirement age. The tool outputs the corpus at 60, splits it into the 60% you can withdraw lump-sum (tax-free) and the 40% mandatorily annuitised (which then determines your monthly pension at the prevailing annuity rate of about 6-7%).

Mode d’emploi

Utiliser NPS Calculator en 5 étapes

  1. Enter your current age - the calculator computes years to retirement (age 60).

  2. Enter your monthly NPS contribution (employee contribution; employer contribution is separate).

  3. Set the expected annual return - typical balanced NPS returns are 9-11% over long horizons.

  4. Set the annuity rate at retirement (currently 6-7% for most providers).

  5. View the projected corpus at 60, the 60% lump-sum withdrawable, and the monthly pension.

Comment fonctionne NPS Calculator

NPS contributions are invested across Equity (E), Corporate Bonds (C), Government Securities (G) and Alternative Investments (A) based on your asset allocation. The corpus grows at the blended return of all four funds. At age 60, you can withdraw 60% as a tax-free lump sum and use the remaining 40% to buy an annuity from an IRDAI-approved insurer. The annuity pays you a monthly pension for life.

Formula

Corpus = P × ([(1 + r/12)^n − 1] × 12 / r); Pension = (0.4 × Corpus) × annuity rate / 12

  • PMonthly contribution
  • rExpected annual return (decimal)

Comment NPS Calculator obtient son résultat

NPS Tier-1 has an EEE-like tax structure: contributions get 80C (₹1.5L cap) plus an additional 80CCD(1B) ₹50,000 deduction. Employer contributions up to 10% of Basic+DA are deductible under 80CCD(2) without any cap - making employer NPS one of the most tax-efficient salary components possible. The lump-sum withdrawal at 60 is fully tax-free. Only the annuity income is taxed, at slab rate.

Asset allocation matters more than picking 'good' fund managers. Active Choice lets you set your own E:C:G:A split (E capped at 75% till age 50, tapering to 50% by 60). Auto Choice has three preset glide paths: Aggressive (75% equity at 35), Moderate (50%), Conservative (25%) - each tapers down equity as you age. For most subscribers, Aggressive Auto Choice has historically delivered the highest long-term returns while protecting capital in the years near retirement.

The 40% mandatory annuity is the most-debated feature of NPS. The current annuity rates (6-7%) are lower than long-term equity returns, which means annuitising a large corpus locks you into a sub-equity rate for life. The trade-off: predictable monthly income, no longevity risk, no need to manage the corpus in old age. Many financial planners recommend the minimum 40% annuitisation and using the 60% lump-sum to set up a separate SWP (systematic withdrawal plan) from a balanced mutual fund.

₹5,000/month from age 30 till 60 at 10% blended return

Total contributions ₹18,00,000. Projected corpus at 60 ≈ ₹1,13,77,000. 60% lump-sum (tax-free) ≈ ₹68.26 lakh. 40% annuitised (₹45.51 lakh) at 6.5% annuity rate gives a monthly pension of ≈ ₹24,650 for life. Tax saved during accumulation in the 30% slab ≈ ₹17,500/year × 30 years ≈ ₹5.25 lakh in extra take-home, partly compounding into more savings.

₹10,000/month from age 35 till 60 at 11%

Total contributions ₹30,00,000. Projected corpus ≈ ₹1,75,93,000. 60% lump-sum ≈ ₹1.06 crore tax-free. 40% annuitised (₹70.37 lakh) at 6.5% = monthly pension of ≈ ₹38,120 for life. The combined wealth available at retirement (lump-sum + capitalised pension) is roughly 6× the contributions.

Cas d’usage

Quand utiliser NPS Calculator

  • Salaried employees in the 30% bracket who already max 80C (₹1.5L) and want an additional ₹50,000 tax saving per year through 80CCD(1B). The tax saving alone funds a meaningful slice of the contribution.
  • Self-employed professionals with no EPF safety net using NPS as their primary retirement engine. The Tier-1 ₹500 minimum contribution makes it easy to keep an account active even in lean years.
  • Senior employees (45+) with surplus cash who are too late for high-equity SIPs but still want a tax-advantaged retirement vehicle - NPS Conservative Auto Choice + 80CCD(1B) is hard to beat.
  • Couples treating NPS as a bequest and survivor pension. Joint-life annuity options pay 100% pension to the surviving spouse - a useful longevity hedge.
Attention

Erreurs et pièges courants

  • Contributing only enough for the 80C limit. Most of NPS's tax magic is in 80CCD(1B), the additional ₹50,000 not counted in 80C - claim it.
  • Picking a Conservative asset allocation in your 30s. Equity caps at 75% till 50 and you have 25-30 years for volatility to smooth out - Aggressive is typically the right default.
  • Forgetting NPS exists when changing jobs. The PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number) is portable; you don't need to open a new account, just update your employer.
  • Treating Tier-2 like Tier-1. Tier-2 is just a regular mutual fund without lock-in or tax benefits - useful for liquid savings, not retirement.
  • Withdrawing the 60% lump-sum and parking it in FDs. After 60% tax-free, deploying it in a balanced or hybrid mutual fund SWP usually beats FD returns.
Conseils d’expert

Tirez le meilleur de cet outil

  • Always opt for Direct PRAN (eNPS) - registration costs are lower and you avoid the bank's persistent-customer fee.
  • Use Auto Aggressive Choice for accumulation if you don't want to think about asset allocation; switch to Active Choice in your 50s if you need more control.
  • Compare annuity rates across the seven empanelled annuity service providers at retirement. Differences of 0.5-1% on a ₹50 lakh annuitisation translate to ₹2,000-3,000/month difference in pension.
  • If your employer offers NPS as a salary-restructure option, the 80CCD(2) deduction (employer contribution up to 10% of Basic+DA) is the most tax-efficient ₹70,000-1.5 lakh you'll ever shelter - use it fully.

FAQ

Questions sur NPS Calculator

What is NPS?

The National Pension System is a defined-contribution retirement scheme regulated by PFRDA. You contribute regularly during your working years; the corpus is invested in equity, corporate bonds and government securities; and at age 60 you can withdraw 60% lump-sum and use 40% to buy an annuity that funds your monthly pension.

What tax benefits does NPS offer?

NPS contributions get a 80C deduction (within the ₹1.5L combined limit) plus an additional ₹50,000 deduction under Section 80CCD(1B). Employer NPS contribution up to 10% of Basic+DA is deductible under 80CCD(2) without any cap. The 60% lump-sum at retirement is tax-free; only the annuity is taxed at slab rate.

What returns can I expect from NPS?

Long-term blended NPS returns (E + C + G) have averaged 9-11% over the last decade for Aggressive subscribers. Conservative subscribers earn 8-9%. Returns are market-linked and not guaranteed.

Is the 40% annuity mandatory?

Yes. PFRDA rules require at least 40% of the corpus at age 60 to be annuitised (60% if you exit before 60). The annuity provides lifelong monthly income but locks the corpus at the prevailing annuity rate (currently 6-7%).

Can I withdraw NPS money before 60?

Partial withdrawals are allowed for specific purposes (children's higher education, marriage, medical emergencies, home purchase) up to 25% of own contributions, after a 3-year lock-in. Premature exit (before 60) requires 80% annuitisation with only 20% lump-sum, making it a poor option except in extreme cases.

Is NPS better than EPF or PPF?

NPS has higher expected returns (equity exposure) but mandatory annuitisation. EPF gives a guaranteed rate (8.25% currently) but no equity upside. PPF is fully tax-free but caps at ₹1.5L/year. Most planners recommend stacking all three: EPF (automatic), PPF (tax-free debt), NPS (equity-linked plus extra ₹50K tax saving).

Indian financial products - home loans, fixed deposits, mutual funds, NPS, insurance - each carry their own quirks: monthly reducing balance vs flat-rate interest, quarterly vs monthly compounding, indexation on capital gains, the choice between the old and new tax regime. We design every finance calculator to use the formula that an Indian bank, AMC, or insurer would actually use, and to surface the assumptions in plain English so you can audit the result against your own statement.

Use this calculator alongside the EMI, SIP and inflation calculators to plan your money holistically. A standalone EMI number means little until you compare it with your in-hand salary, your existing debt-to-income ratio, and the impact of inflation on the real cost of the loan. The related-tool grid below makes it one click to chain these analyses together.

The NPS Calculator is part of the Finance suite on Online Calculator Tools, alongside 6 related calculators. All tools share the same UI patterns, the same privacy-first rendering (nothing is sent to a server), and the same commitment to showing the formula and assumptions behind every result.
