Comprendre : Volume Calculator

Volume calculations come up constantly in Indian homes and businesses: sizing water tanks (overhead and underground), checking concrete pours for slabs and footings, computing room volume for AC sizing or HVAC, packaging dimensions for parcels and luggage, swimming pool capacity, fuel tank size, gas cylinder capacity, and grain storage in silos and godowns. This calculator handles all six standard 3D shapes - cube, rectangular prism, cylinder, cone, sphere, pyramid - with the formula shown so you can verify by hand and understand the geometry.

Class 5-10 mathematics covers volume systematically: rectangular solids in middle school, cylinders and spheres in Class 8-9, cones and pyramids in Class 9-10. JEE/NEET aspirants encounter volume in mensuration, frustums, hemispheres, and integration-based volumes of revolution. For everyday users, the most-used formulas are cylindrical (water tanks, drums, pipes) and rectangular (rooms, boxes, trenches). The cylinder volume formula πr²h shows up in plumbing flow calculations, oil storage, and even compressor sizing.

Mode d’emploi

Utiliser Volume Calculator en 3 étapes

  1. Pick the shape.

  2. Enter the dimensions.

  3. Read the volume.

La formule

Comment fonctionne Volume Calculator

Volume formulas relate to area: cylinder is base area × height; cone and pyramid are one-third of that; sphere is (4/3)πr³.

Formula

Cube: s³ Rect prism: l × w × h Cylinder: π × r² × h Cone: ⅓ × π × r² × h Sphere: (4/3) × π × r³ Pyramid: ⅓ × base area × h

  • sSide of cube
  • l, w, hLength, width, height
  • rRadius

Comment Volume Calculator obtient son résultat

Six standard volume formulas: Cube = side³ (special prism). Rectangular prism (cuboid) = length × width × height. Cylinder = π × radius² × height = base area × height. Cone = ⅓ × π × radius² × height = one-third of equivalent cylinder. Sphere = (4/3) × π × radius³. Pyramid = ⅓ × base area × height. Notice the pattern: 'pointed' shapes (cone, pyramid) are always one-third the volume of their 'straight-sided' counterparts (cylinder, prism) - a beautiful geometric result first proven by Archimedes.

Unit conversions: 1 m³ = 1000 litres = 35.31 cubic feet = 1.308 cubic yards. 1 cubic foot ≈ 28.32 litres. 1 cubic inch ≈ 16.39 ml. So a 2 m × 1.5 m × 1 m water tank holds 3,000 litres. A 100-litre water heater is 0.1 m³. Volume calculations almost always need unit conversion to express results in the practical unit (litres for water, m³ for concrete, cubic feet for grain).

Composite shapes: real-world objects are often combinations - a water bottle is a cylinder + a hemisphere top; a pencil is a cylinder + a cone tip; a temple dome is a hemisphere over a cylindrical base. Decompose the object into known shapes, compute each volume, and sum (or subtract for hollow regions). For irregular objects (a stone, a piece of fruit), use Archimedes' water-displacement method - submerge the object in water and measure the displaced volume.

Exemples

Exemples résolus

Overhead water tank: cylinder, radius 0.8 m, height 1.2 m

Volume = π × 0.8² × 1.2 = 2.41 m³ = 2,413 litres. Standard 2,500-litre Sintex tank for a small family.

Concrete slab pour: 30 ft × 25 ft × 5 inch thickness

Volume = 30 × 25 × (5/12) = 312.5 ft³ = 8.85 m³. At ~7 bags cement per m³ for M20: ~62 bags. Order with 10% wastage buffer.

Room volume for AC sizing: 15 ft × 12 ft × 10 ft ceiling

Volume = 1800 ft³ = 51 m³. For Indian summer cooling, ~25 BTU per ft² floor area: 15 × 12 × 25 = 4500 BTU. Need ~0.4 ton AC; round up to 1 ton (smallest practical size).

Cas d’usage

Quand utiliser Volume Calculator

  • Class 5-10 mathematics - mensuration of 3D shapes.
  • Water tank sizing - Sintex/Penguin/Vectus tank capacity in litres.
  • Concrete and cement quantity estimation for slabs, columns, footings.
  • Swimming pool and aquarium capacity.
  • Packaging design and shipping - measuring parcel volume for courier rates.
  • Industrial - fuel tank, oil drum, gas cylinder capacity.
  • Civil engineering - earthwork volume for excavation, embankment.
  • Agriculture - grain storage in silos and godowns.
Attention

Erreurs et pièges courants

  • Confusing surface area with volume. Surface area is the outer skin (m²); volume is the inside space (m³).
  • Using diameter instead of radius. All formulas use radius - half of diameter.
  • Forgetting the ⅓ factor for cones and pyramids.
  • Mixing units. All dimensions must be in the same unit for the volume formula.
  • Computing without unit conversion. Volume in m³ × 1000 = litres; do this when reporting tank capacity.
  • Treating a cylinder's diameter as its height when sizes are similar.
Conseils d’expert

Tirez le meilleur de cet outil

  • Remember: cone = ⅓ cylinder of same base and height; pyramid = ⅓ prism of same base and height.
  • 1 m³ = 1000 litres. Use this constantly for water and liquid volume conversions.
  • For composite shapes, decompose into known shapes, sum volumes (or subtract for hollow regions).
  • Sphere volume grows fast: doubling radius means 8× volume. A 2x larger ball has 8x the water.
  • Pair with the area, square footage and concrete calculators on this site for full 3D planning.
FAQ

Questions sur Volume Calculator

Why is cone volume one-third of a cylinder?

Geometric truth - a cone with same base and height is exactly one-third the volume of the cylinder around it. Demonstrable by water-pouring experiments.

How many litres in a cubic metre?

1000 litres = 1 m³. So a tank of 2.5 × 1.5 × 1 m holds 3,750 litres.

How do I compute volume of an irregular shape?

Water displacement method - submerge it in water, measure the volume of water displaced. For complex CAD shapes, software does numerical integration.

What's the volume of a 1 BHK flat?

Average ceiling height 3 m × area 600 sq ft (≈ 56 m²) = ~168 m³. Useful for AC sizing and HVAC calculations.

Can I compute volume of an ellipsoid?

(4/3) × π × a × b × c (three semi-axes). Not in this tool's preset list, but you can use the Scientific Calculator with that formula.

Volume vs capacity?

Volume is the geometric space; capacity is what it can hold. Often the same, but a thick-walled bottle has volume less than its outer geometry suggests.

Math in your browser

From simple percentages to scientific notation, statistics, geometry and big-number arithmetic - every common math problem you'd reach for a calculator for, runs in your browser with no installs. The fraction calculator preserves exact rationals, the big-number calculator uses BigInt for hundreds of digits without precision loss, and the scientific calculator's expression evaluator is a hand-written shunting-yard parser (no eval) that supports trig, log, factorial and parentheses.

If you're a student, double-check your work without paying for a graphing calculator. If you're a professional, use these tools as a sanity check on spreadsheet formulas. Every result is shown alongside its formula and inputs, so the math is always auditable.
