Memahami RD Calculator

The Recurring Deposit is the FD's monthly cousin - a guaranteed-return savings product designed for people who can spare a fixed sum each month rather than a one-time lump. Indian banks and post offices have offered RDs for decades, and they remain a popular choice for short-to-medium term goals: a vacation 2 years away, the next academic year's school fees, building up a down-payment or simply maintaining the discipline of monthly saving in a controlled environment.

This calculator uses the formula that scheduled commercial banks and India Post use for RD calculations - quarterly compounding applied to a stream of monthly deposits, paid out at maturity. The returns are not as high as long-term equity, but they are guaranteed, easy to set up via auto-debit, and the entire tenure runs without you needing to time the market or watch your portfolio.

Cara kerja RD Calculator

A Recurring Deposit (RD) is a savings product where you deposit a fixed amount every month for a fixed tenure. The bank pays interest on each instalment until maturity, with quarterly compounding applied to the running balance. The earlier instalments earn interest for longer, so most of the maturity value comes from compounding on the early instalments rather than late ones.

Formula

M ≈ ΣP × (1 + i)^(n − k + 1) for k = 1..n

Bagaimana RD Calculator mendapatkan hasilnya

Indian banks compute RD interest using quarterly compounding on the running balance. Each month's deposit joins the pool, and at the end of every calendar quarter (June, September, December, March), the bank credits the accumulated quarterly interest to the corpus. This compounding effect is small for a 1-year RD but adds up over a 5-10 year tenure. Post Office RDs use a slightly different scheme: a fixed maturity table, not quarterly compounding, with rates revised quarterly by the Government of India.

The first instalment earns interest for the longest period, and the last one for just one month. So the average instalment effectively earns interest for roughly half the tenure. This is why the maturity-to-deposit ratio is lower than for an equivalent FD tenure - but higher than what you'd get holding the same money in a savings account month after month.

Most banks let you book the RD with a preferred date of monthly debit (the 1st, 5th, 10th, etc.). Missing an instalment by more than a couple of days usually attracts a small penalty - typically ₹1-2 per ₹100 per month - and repeated defaults (3-6 missed instalments depending on bank policy) can lead the bank to close the RD prematurely and pay you the savings-account rate on what was deposited so far.

Contoh

Contoh soal

12-month vacation RD: ₹5,000/month at 7.0%

Total deposit ₹60,000. Maturity: approximately ₹62,357. Interest earned: ₹2,357. Modest, but better than letting ₹5,000 a month sit in a savings account at 3-4%.

Down-payment RD: ₹15,000/month for 5 years at 7.0%

Total deposit ₹9,00,000. Maturity: approximately ₹10,75,500. Interest earned: ₹1,75,500. Useful when you have a defined goal at a defined date - a debt-fund SIP would offer comparable returns with marginal tax benefits but slightly more volatility.

Kasus penggunaan

Kapan memakai RD Calculator

  • Salaried employees building a fixed-purpose corpus over 1-3 years where capital safety matters more than maximising return - a planned international trip, a new vehicle, an annual school fee.
  • Risk-averse savers who don't want exposure to mutual funds but want better returns than a savings account, with the discipline of monthly auto-debit.
  • Senior citizens looking for a guaranteed-rate monthly savings habit at the slightly higher senior-citizen RD rate offered by most banks.
  • First-time savers using an RD as a 'training wheels' product before graduating to debt mutual funds and SIPs.
Perhatikan

Kesalahan dan jebakan umum

  • Choosing a tenure longer than the goal. RD funds locked for 5 years cannot be partially withdrawn easily; if your goal is 2 years away, book a 2-year RD.
  • Missing instalments routinely. Beyond the small per-month penalty, repeated misses can lead to premature closure and a lower rate.
  • Comparing pre-tax RD returns to post-tax mutual fund LTCG returns. Always compare on the same tax basis.
  • Forgetting to submit Form 15G/15H if your total income is below the taxable threshold. The bank deducts TDS otherwise and you have to claim a refund.
Tips pro

Manfaatkan alat ini lebih jauh

  • Pick a debit date close to your salary credit date - this avoids the awkward situation of an RD instalment bouncing because the salary hadn't landed.
  • Senior citizens should always negotiate the rate - most banks add 0.25-0.50% for seniors, but it's not always automatic on online RD bookings.
  • If you're committing to an RD longer than 3 years, compare with a debt mutual fund SIP. Post-tax returns can be similar with somewhat better liquidity from the mutual fund.
  • Use the RD calculator alongside the SIP calculator for the same monthly amount to see the gap between guaranteed and equity-like returns. The trade-off is risk, not just return.
FAQ

Pertanyaan tentang RD Calculator

What is a Recurring Deposit (RD)?

An RD is a deposit scheme where you commit to depositing a fixed amount every month for a fixed period. At maturity you receive the principal plus accumulated interest.

What is the typical RD tenure?

Indian banks usually offer RDs from 6 months to 10 years. Post Office RDs run for 5 years and can be extended in 5-year blocks.

Are RD returns guaranteed?

Yes. RDs are debt instruments offered by banks and post offices. The interest rate is locked at the time of opening, so the returns are fully predictable.

Is RD interest taxable?

Yes. RD interest is fully taxable under "Income from Other Sources". Banks deduct TDS if annual RD interest crosses ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for senior citizens).

What if I miss an RD instalment?

Most banks charge a small penalty (typically ₹1–₹2 per ₹100 per month) for missed instalments. Repeated defaults can lead to closure of the RD before maturity.

Is RD better than SIP?

RDs offer guaranteed returns and capital safety, but lower long-term growth. Equity SIPs have higher historical returns (10–12%) but carry market risk. They suit different goals - short-term safety vs. long-term wealth creation.

Indian financial products - home loans, fixed deposits, mutual funds, NPS, insurance - each carry their own quirks: monthly reducing balance vs flat-rate interest, quarterly vs monthly compounding, indexation on capital gains, the choice between the old and new tax regime. We design every finance calculator to use the formula that an Indian bank, AMC, or insurer would actually use, and to surface the assumptions in plain English so you can audit the result against your own statement.

Use this calculator alongside the EMI, SIP and inflation calculators to plan your money holistically. A standalone EMI number means little until you compare it with your in-hand salary, your existing debt-to-income ratio, and the impact of inflation on the real cost of the loan. The related-tool grid below makes it one click to chain these analyses together.
