SWP withdraws a fixed amount each month; the remaining corpus grows at the assumed rate before the next withdrawal. This is a simplified model (no tax, no loads, no changing SWP amount).

Illustrative only. Real SWPs face market volatility, tax on capital gains, exit loads, and changing NAV. Consult a SEBI registered advisor for retirement drawdown planning.

概要

SWP Calculatorとは

An SWP is the mirror image of a SIP. Instead of investing a fixed amount every month, you withdraw a fixed amount every month from an existing corpus while the rest stays invested and continues to earn returns. For retirees, this is the practical alternative to an annuity - your corpus generates monthly income, you keep market exposure on the un-withdrawn portion, and you keep ownership of the corpus (which can pass to heirs) instead of surrendering it for an annuity.

This calculator implements the standard SWP simulation: each month you withdraw the chosen amount, the remaining corpus earns the assumed return for that month, and the cycle repeats. The output shows you when (or whether) the corpus runs out, and what the residual balance looks like at any point in the tenure. It's a practical retirement-planning tool that helps answer the most important post-retirement question: 'Will the money last?'

使い方

SWP Calculatorの使い方(5ステップ)

  1. Enter your initial corpus - typically the lump-sum you have at retirement after 60% NPS withdrawal plus other savings.

  2. Enter the expected annual return on the un-withdrawn corpus (8-10% for balanced funds, 6-8% for debt funds).

  3. Enter the monthly withdrawal you need to fund expenses.

  4. Enter the planned tenure (years you want the SWP to last).

  5. View the corpus depletion timeline, total amount withdrawn, and residual balance at the end.

計算式

SWP Calculatorのしくみ

Each month the calculator deducts your withdrawal from the corpus, applies the assumed monthly return to the remainder, and rolls the new balance forward. The longer your withdrawal stays smaller than the corpus's earnings, the more sustainable the plan. Once the corpus growth can't keep up with withdrawals, the corpus depletes - and the calculator shows the exact month this happens.

Formula

Balance(t+1) = (Balance(t) − Withdrawal) × (1 + r/12)

  • WithdrawalFixed monthly withdrawal
  • rAnnual rate of return

The 4% rule from US retirement planning suggests withdrawing 4% of your initial corpus per year (₹40,000/month from ₹1.2 crore) as a sustainable baseline for a 30-year retirement. For Indian markets with higher equity returns and higher inflation, planners often suggest 4.5-5%. Going above 6% creates real risk of running out of money in a 25+ year retirement, especially if a major drawdown hits in the first 5 years (sequence-of-returns risk).

SWP from equity-oriented mutual funds has a tax advantage over the same income from FDs: only the gains portion of each withdrawal is taxed, and long-term equity gains above ₹1.25 lakh per year are taxed at just 12.5%. FD interest is taxed at slab rate (up to 30%). For retirees in the 20-30% slab, the post-tax SWP income is meaningfully higher than the same amount from a same-sized FD corpus.

Use balanced or hybrid funds for SWP rather than pure equity. The volatility of pure equity makes the 'sequence of returns' risk dangerous - a 30% market drop in the first year can permanently impair the corpus, even if the long-term average return is excellent. Aggressive Hybrid funds (65-80% equity) and Multi-Asset funds typically work better as SWP source funds.

例題

計算例

₹1 crore corpus, ₹50,000/month withdrawal at 9% return

Corpus lasts approximately 27 years before depleting. Total withdrawals over the period ≈ ₹1.62 crore. The 9% return covers the withdrawals comfortably for the first 15 years, but the corpus starts shrinking faster after year 18 as withdrawals exceed earnings.

₹50 lakh corpus, ₹40,000/month at 9% return

Corpus lasts about 14 years. This is too short for a typical 25-30 year retirement - you would either need to lower the monthly withdrawal to ~₹30,000 or build a larger corpus before retiring. The calculator shows the exact threshold where the corpus would last 25 years for any given combination.

活用場面

SWP Calculatorを使う場面

  • Retirees converting their accumulated corpus into a monthly income stream while keeping ownership of the principal - the post-tax SWP route is usually superior to an annuity for those willing to manage the corpus actively.
  • Sabbatical or career-break planners using SWP to fund living expenses for a defined 1-3 year period without permanently selling investments.
  • Inheritance recipients setting up a steady income from a one-time inheritance - the SWP keeps the principal invested while providing regular cash flow.
  • Goal-funding for time-bound expenses - for example, drawing ₹50,000/month for 5 years to fund a child's overseas education from a corpus saved in equity funds.
注意

よくある間違いと落とし穴

  • Choosing a pure-equity fund for SWP. Volatility creates sequence-of-returns risk; aggressive hybrid or multi-asset funds are usually better.
  • Setting the withdrawal too high relative to the corpus. The classic 4-5% rule is a useful guardrail; above 6% is risky for long retirements.
  • Forgetting inflation. ₹50,000/month is generous today but barely meaningful in 25 years at 6% inflation. Plan a step-up SWP that grows withdrawals 5-6% per year.
  • Ignoring the exit load. Most equity funds charge 1% exit load if redeemed within a year - ensure your SWP starts after the first year to avoid losses.
  • Not modelling sequence-of-returns risk. A 30% drop in the first 2 years of retirement is far more damaging than the same drop in year 20.
プロのコツ

このツールを使いこなす

  • Run the calculator twice - once at your expected return, once at a conservative return 2-3 percentage points lower. Plan the SWP that survives the conservative scenario.
  • Use a step-up SWP that increases your withdrawal by 5-6% per year to keep pace with inflation. Most AMCs allow this through a stepped SIP/SWP feature.
  • Keep 1-2 years of expenses in a liquid or arbitrage fund as a buffer - this lets you avoid redeeming equity-oriented funds during a sharp market drawdown.
  • If you have a spouse, set up the SWP from a jointly-held folio for smoother estate transfer.
FAQ

SWP Calculatorに関するよくある質問

What is an SWP?

Systematic Withdrawal Plan - a mutual fund facility where you withdraw a fixed amount every month from your existing corpus, while the rest stays invested. It's the inverse of a SIP and a popular post-retirement income tool.

Is SWP better than an annuity?

Mostly yes, for those willing to manage some volatility. SWP offers higher expected returns, full liquidity (no annuity lock-in), preserves corpus for heirs, and is more tax-efficient. Annuity wins on guaranteed lifelong income with no longevity risk.

How is SWP taxed?

Only the capital-gain portion of each withdrawal is taxed. Equity-oriented funds: gains above ₹1.25L/year LTCG at 12.5% (after 12 months); below that, STCG at 20%. Debt-oriented funds: all gains at slab rate as per FY24-25 rules.

What corpus do I need for retirement SWP?

Rough rule: corpus ≈ 25-30× annual expenses. For ₹50,000/month (₹6L/year) you'd need ₹1.5-1.8 crore. Use the retirement calculator on this site to back-solve the corpus required for your specific lifestyle and expected longevity.

Which mutual fund is best for SWP?

Aggressive Hybrid (65-80% equity) and Multi-Asset funds work well - enough equity for long-term growth, debt cushion to soften volatility. Pure equity SWPs face sequence-of-returns risk; pure debt SWPs lose to inflation over long retirements.

Can I change the SWP amount later?

Yes. AMCs let you stop, pause, increase or decrease the SWP at any time without penalty (other than exit-load if redeeming within first year).

Make confident money decisions

Indian financial products - home loans, fixed deposits, mutual funds, NPS, insurance - each carry their own quirks: monthly reducing balance vs flat-rate interest, quarterly vs monthly compounding, indexation on capital gains, the choice between the old and new tax regime. We design every finance calculator to use the formula that an Indian bank, AMC, or insurer would actually use, and to surface the assumptions in plain English so you can audit the result against your own statement.

Use this calculator alongside the EMI, SIP and inflation calculators to plan your money holistically. A standalone EMI number means little until you compare it with your in-hand salary, your existing debt-to-income ratio, and the impact of inflation on the real cost of the loan. The related-tool grid below makes it one click to chain these analyses together.

The SWP Calculator is part of the Finance suite on Online Calculator Tools, alongside 6 related calculators. All tools share the same UI patterns, the same privacy-first rendering (nothing is sent to a server), and the same commitment to showing the formula and assumptions behind every result.
