Sobre

Entenda: Concrete Calculator

Concrete is the backbone of every Indian construction project - from rural village houses to multi-storey urban apartments, from rural panchayat roads to metropolitan bridges. Getting the quantity right matters because under-ordering halts work and over-ordering means wasted money plus disposal headaches (concrete sets within hours of mixing). This calculator gives you concrete volume in multiple units (cubic feet, cubic yards, cubic metres) and converts to 50 kg cement bags using standard Indian mix ratios. Used by homeowners building their own house, civil engineering students, contractors verifying material orders, and DIYers pouring driveways or footings.

Indian construction predominantly uses M-grade concrete designations: M15 (1:2:4 cement:sand:aggregate) for non-load-bearing items, M20 (1:1.5:3, the most common for residential slabs, beams and columns), M25 (1:1:2, for taller buildings or higher load), and M30+ for high-rise structures. Each grade has a specific cement content per cubic metre - M20 uses approximately 320kg (6.4 bags of 50kg) per m³, while M25 uses 360kg (7.2 bags). This calculator works with standard ratios; for design-mix concrete used in commercial projects, consult a structural engineer or use the exact mix design from the Bureau of Indian Standards (IS 456).

Como usar

Como usar Concrete Calculator em 3 passos

  1. Pick units (feet/inches or metres).

  2. Enter length, width and thickness.

  3. Read the volume in cu ft, cu yd, cu m and 50 kg bag count.

A fórmula

Como funciona Concrete Calculator

Volume = length × width × thickness (with thickness converted from inches/cm to the chosen length unit). For Indian readymix M20 grade, ~6 bags of 50 kg cement per cubic metre is typical.

Formula

Volume = L × W × T Cubic yards = cubic feet / 27 Cubic metres ≈ cubic feet × 0.0283

  • L, W, TLength, width, thickness
  • 27Cubic feet per cubic yard
A matemática

Como Concrete Calculator chega ao resultado

Volume calculation: simply length × width × thickness, with units consistent. The calculator handles unit conversion (inches to feet, mm to metres) automatically. For irregular shapes (L-shaped slabs, foundation footings with varying widths), break into rectangular sections, calculate each, and sum. Output is converted to cubic feet, cubic yards (1 yd³ = 27 ft³) and cubic metres (1 m³ ≈ 35.31 ft³).

Cement bag count for M20 grade (1:1.5:3): approximately 6.4 bags of 50kg cement per m³ of concrete. For M15: ~5 bags/m³. For M25: ~7.2 bags/m³. Plus sand (0.5 m³ per m³ of concrete for M20) and aggregate (0.7 m³). Water-cement ratio of 0.45-0.50 by weight gives workable concrete with adequate strength. Always order 5-10% extra for spillage, formwork settling, and slight over-pour at edges.

Wastage and quality: Real-world concrete pouring has 5-15% wastage from spillage, formwork seepage, and uneven base levels. Use 5% for ready-mix concrete (RMC, where mixing is precise), 10% for site-mix concrete (where workers measure approximately). Quality control essentials: slump test (50-100mm for slabs, 25-75mm for columns), 7-day and 28-day cube strength tests, proper vibration during pour, and curing for 14-28 days to develop full strength.

Exemplos

Exemplos resolvidos

Roof slab: 30×30 ft × 5 inch thickness

Volume in ft³: 30 × 30 × (5/12) = 375 ft³ = 13.89 yd³ = 10.62 m³. M20 cement: 10.62 × 6.4 = ~68 bags of 50kg. Plus ~5.3 m³ sand and 7.4 m³ aggregate. RMC cost (₹4,500-6,000/m³): ₹47,000-₹64,000.

Compound wall foundation: 60 ft long × 1.5 ft wide × 1 ft deep

Volume: 60 × 1.5 × 1 = 90 ft³ = 2.55 m³. M15 cement: 2.55 × 5 = ~13 bags. Plus 1.3 m³ sand, 1.8 m³ aggregate. For boundary walls, M15 is sufficient (lower strength, lower cost).

Driveway: 12×20 ft × 4 inch with steel mesh reinforcement

Volume: 12 × 20 × (4/12) = 80 ft³ = 2.27 m³. M20 cement: 2.27 × 6.4 = ~15 bags. Plus ~1.1 m³ sand, 1.6 m³ aggregate. Use steel mesh (8mm bars at 8" spacing) over the entire area for crack resistance.

Casos de uso

Quando usar Concrete Calculator

  • Self-construction of independent houses in tier-2/3 cities.
  • Estimating material orders for plot boundary walls and gates.
  • Foundation footings for compound walls, gazebos, and outdoor structures.
  • Roof and floor slab planning for ground+1 or ground+2 residential builds.
  • Driveways, walkways and outdoor patio planning.
  • Verifying contractor material quotes against expected volume.
  • Civil engineering coursework - bill of quantities exercises.
  • Comparing site-mix vs ready-mix concrete (RMC) cost for a project.
Atenção

Erros e armadilhas comuns

  • Forgetting to add wastage factor. 5-10% over-order prevents stoppage mid-pour.
  • Confusing M15 with M20 mix ratios. Use the right grade for the right structural purpose.
  • Calculating bags using density of dry cement instead of concrete cement content. Use the ratio formula or m³-to-bag conversion.
  • Ignoring steel reinforcement (TMT bars) - calculated separately based on slab size, span and load.
  • Pouring without proper curing. Concrete needs 14-28 days of water curing to develop full strength.
Dicas

Aproveite mais esta ferramenta

  • For slabs and columns, use M20 minimum (IS 456 recommends M20 for reinforced concrete).
  • Always order 5-10% extra concrete to account for spillage and formwork settling.
  • Use ready-mix concrete (RMC) for projects above 5 m³ - quality is more consistent than site-mix.
  • Cure concrete by keeping it wet for at least 14 days post-pour. Strength develops over 28 days.
  • Pair with the square-footage, tile and gravel calculators on this site for full construction planning.
Perguntas frequentes

Perguntas sobre Concrete Calculator

How many bags for a typical driveway?

A 12 ft × 20 ft × 4 inch driveway is about 80 cubic feet (~2.96 cubic yards / ~2.27 m³) - about 14-16 bags of 50 kg cement plus aggregate.

Add wastage?

Yes - typical wastage is 5-10% for spillage and over-pour. Multiply your final volume by 1.05-1.10.

How does grade affect quantity?

Higher grades (M25, M30) use slightly more cement per cubic metre - adjust by ~10% for M25 vs M20.

What about steel reinforcement?

Not included - this is concrete-only volume. Steel is calculated separately based on slab type and span.

Plan home projects without overshooting

Renovating, decorating or estimating utilities at home almost always reduces to three numbers - area, volume, and cost. Get any of them wrong by 10% and you're either short of paint and tile, or you've over-ordered and have to return material. This calculator uses the same wastage allowances, packing rules and unit conversions that contractors and material suppliers actually use in India.

Use it together with the paint, tile, electricity bill and BTU calculators to plan a complete renovation budget. Indian states have very different electricity tariffs and material prices, so the calculators expose state-wise tariffs (Maharashtra MSEDCL, Tamil Nadu TANGEDCO, Delhi BSES, Karnataka BESCOM, etc.) and let you override defaults to match your supplier's pricing.
