Что такое Paint Calculator

House painting is one of those projects where Indian homeowners consistently over-spend or under-buy. Over-spending happens when painters or hardware shop owners quote vague 'estimates' that include 20-30% safety margin you don't need; under-buying happens when you trust the can label and end up rushing to the shop midway through a coat (and the new can's batch might not exactly match the colour). This calculator helps you arrive at the right quantity using the exact wall area, paint coverage rate per litre, number of coats, and door/window deductions - so you buy enough but not too much.

For a typical 2BHK Indian flat (1000-1200 sq ft carpet, ~3500-4000 sq ft wall area for interiors), full repainting requires roughly 25-35 litres of premium emulsion plus 6-8 litres of primer. At ₹400-₹800 per litre depending on brand and finish, that's ₹15,000-₹30,000 in paint alone (labour and supplies add another ₹10,000-₹20,000). Getting the quantity right matters. The calculator also recommends optimal pack sizes - 4L + 20L tins instead of many 1L cans - which is significantly cheaper per litre and matches actual brand SKUs (Asian Paints, Berger, Nerolac, Dulux all sell 1L, 4L, 10L and 20L variants).

Как пользоваться

Как пользоваться: Paint Calculator, шагов: 5

  1. Enter the total wall area in sq.ft. For a single rectangular room use perimeter × height.

  2. Subtract the area of doors and windows you do not plan to paint.

  3. Pick a paint type (premium emulsion, distemper, exterior, primer) - coverage is pre-filled.

  4. Set the number of coats (2 is standard for opacity).

  5. Enter the price per litre. The result shows litres needed, recommended pack combination and total spend.

Как работает Paint Calculator

Paint coverage is the area one litre can cover at a single coat on a smooth, primed surface. Premium emulsions typically cover 110-160 sq.ft per litre per coat, while distemper and exterior paints cover less because of texture and weatherproofing solids. The calculator multiplies wall area by the number of coats, divides by coverage to get litres, and then groups the litres into available pack sizes (1 L, 4 L, 10 L, 20 L) using a greedy match - biggest pack first - so you do not over-purchase.

Formula

Litres = (Net wall area × Coats) / Coverage per litre

  • Net wall areaTotal wall area minus doors and windows, in sq.ft
  • CoatsLayers of paint applied (2 is most common)
  • Coverage per litreArea covered by 1 L of paint per coat (sq.ft)
Математика

Как Paint Calculator получает результат

Step 1: measure total wall area. For a single rectangular room: perimeter × height. For a 12×10 ft room with 10 ft ceiling, perimeter is (12+10) × 2 = 44 ft, wall area is 44 × 10 = 440 sq ft. Step 2: subtract openings. Standard door = 3×7 = 21 sq ft; standard window = 4×4 = 16 sq ft. A typical bedroom has 1 door + 1 window = ~37 sq ft to deduct. Step 3: choose paint type and look up coverage rate. Step 4: multiply by number of coats and divide by coverage rate to get litres needed.

Coverage rates vary by paint type: Premium emulsion (Royale Shyne, Apex Premium, Pearl Glo) covers 130-160 sq ft per litre per coat on smooth primed walls. Standard emulsion (Apcolite, Easy Clean) covers 110-130. Distemper covers 90-110 sq ft. Exterior emulsion (Apex Ultima, Weather Coat) covers 100-130 due to higher solids content. Primer (Acrylic Wall Primer, Tractor Primer) covers 100-140 per litre per coat. These are 'first coat' figures on smooth primed walls; textured or fresh plaster surfaces consume 20-30% more.

Recommended pack-size assembly: rather than 17 individual 1L tins, the calculator finds the best combination of 20L + 10L + 4L + 1L packs to minimise cost and waste. Bulk packs are significantly cheaper per litre - a 20L tin is typically 15-20% cheaper per litre than four 4L tins. Always include a 10-15% safety buffer for retouching, drips and the dreaded 'colour didn't match between batches' problem.

Примеры

Разобранные примеры

2BHK interior: 850 sq ft wall area (after deducting doors/windows)

Premium emulsion @ 140 sq ft/L coverage, 2 coats: (850 × 2) / 140 = 12.1 L. Add 10% buffer: 13.3 L. Pack mix: one 10L + one 4L = 14L. Cost @ ₹500/L: ~₹7,000 for finish paint. Add primer (1 coat @ 130 sq ft/L = 6.5L ≈ 1 × 4L + 3 × 1L): ~₹2,000. Total: ~₹9,000 in paint.

Exterior of an independent house: 1500 sq ft net wall area

Exterior emulsion @ 110 sq ft/L coverage, 2 coats: (1500 × 2) / 110 = 27.3 L. Buffer 15% (more wastage outdoors): 31.4 L. Pack mix: 1 × 20L + 1 × 10L + 1 × 1L = 31L. Cost @ ₹600/L for weather-proof: ~₹18,600. Add primer 1 × 4L: ~₹1,400. Total: ~₹20,000.

Single child's bedroom touch-up: 320 sq ft after deductions

Premium emulsion, 2 coats, 140 sq ft/L: (320 × 2) / 140 = 4.6 L. Buffer: 5.1 L. Pack mix: 1 × 4L + 1 × 1L = 5L. Cost: ~₹2,500. Quick weekend DIY project.

Где применять

Когда использовать: Paint Calculator

  • Planning interior repainting for the entire house before Diwali or Holi.
  • Estimating exterior weatherproof paint for monsoon-readiness.
  • Comparing brands and finishes by total project cost.
  • Verifying contractor quotes - separate material and labour cost components.
  • DIY weekend projects - single room repainting.
  • Builder/developer cost estimation for multiple flats.
  • Buying enough primer separately (often forgotten in initial estimates).
  • Determining when to use bulk 20L tins vs smaller packs for partial projects.
Осторожно

Типичные ошибки и подводные камни

  • Skipping the door/window deduction. Each opening saves you 1-2 litres of paint.
  • Using one coat when two are needed for opacity. Especially common with light colors over dark walls.
  • Forgetting to budget for primer. Primer is a separate purchase, not part of the 'paint' quantity.
  • Buying all 1L tins instead of one bulk pack. 1L is 2-3× more expensive per litre.
  • Not adding the 10-15% safety buffer. Running out mid-project is worse than slight over-buying.

Как получить больше от инструмента

  • Always include primer in your budget - Asian Paints Tractor Emulsion Primer is ₹150-200/L; necessary for new walls and old plaster.
  • Buy paint in bulk pack sizes (10L, 20L) for significant per-litre savings.
  • Stock 1-2L extra for touch-ups over the next year before the batch becomes unavailable.
  • Test colour with a small 200ml sample before buying the full quantity - wall paint looks very different from card swatch.
  • Pair with the tile, concrete and square-footage calculators on this site for full home renovation planning.
Вопросы

Вопросы: Paint Calculator

How do I measure wall area for a full room?

Add the lengths of all four walls (the perimeter), multiply by the ceiling height. Example: a 12×10 ft room with 10 ft ceiling has perimeter 44 ft, so wall area is 440 sq.ft.

Should I deduct doors and windows?

Yes. A standard door takes ~21 sq.ft (3×7 ft) and a window ~15 sq.ft. Deducting prevents over-buying paint.

Why is two coats recommended?

One coat rarely gives full opacity on bare or primed walls. Two coats deliver consistent colour, longer life and reduce show-through.

Does primer count as a coat?

Primer goes on first as a base layer and improves topcoat coverage. Plan for 1 coat of primer plus 2 coats of finish paint. Primer is calculated separately.

Will I need extra paint for textured walls?

Yes. Textured or rough walls absorb 20-30% more paint. Multiply litres by 1.2-1.3 in those rooms.

Are pack sizes the same across brands?

Asian Paints, Berger and Nerolac all sell 1 L, 4 L, 10 L and 20 L tins for most product lines. Some premium ranges only come in 4 L and 20 L. The calculator uses the standard four.

Plan home projects without overshooting

Renovating, decorating or estimating utilities at home almost always reduces to three numbers - area, volume, and cost. Get any of them wrong by 10% and you're either short of paint and tile, or you've over-ordered and have to return material. This calculator uses the same wastage allowances, packing rules and unit conversions that contractors and material suppliers actually use in India.

Use it together with the paint, tile, electricity bill and BTU calculators to plan a complete renovation budget. Indian states have very different electricity tariffs and material prices, so the calculators expose state-wise tariffs (Maharashtra MSEDCL, Tamil Nadu TANGEDCO, Delhi BSES, Karnataka BESCOM, etc.) and let you override defaults to match your supplier's pricing.
