Got 3 credit-card balances at 36% and a personal loan at 18%? Consolidating them into a single new loan at a lower rate can dramatically cut your interest bill - and simplify life with one EMI instead of five. This calculator shows whether the math works for you.

Consolidation saves money

You'd save ₹44,739 in interest if you commit to the new EMI and don't run up the cards again.

Consolidation only works with behaviour change. Cancel or freeze the cards after paying them off. Otherwise you end up with consolidation loan + new card balances - twice as bad.

فهم Debt Consolidation Calculator

Debt consolidation is one of the most reliable wins in personal finance - and one of the most under-utilised. Indian households frequently juggle 3-4 credit cards at 36-42% APR, a fintech personal loan at 16-20%, perhaps a consumer-durable EMI at 18%, all while making minimum payments and never noticeably reducing total debt. Rolling these into a single personal loan at 13-15% can cut interest cost by 40-60% and finish the debt in half the time. The savings can be ₹50,000-2 lakh per year depending on outstanding balances - pure win, requires no extra income.

But consolidation only works if you also stop using the consolidated credit cards. The single most common consolidation failure pattern is: consolidate cards into a personal loan, breathe sigh of relief, run up the cards again over 6-12 months, end up with double the original debt. This calculator shows you the math of consolidation; the behavioural commitment to keep the cards low-utilisation is on you.

طريقة الاستخدام

استخدام Debt Consolidation Calculator في 4 خطوات

  2. Set the new consolidation loan rate and tenure.

  3. Add the processing fee for the new loan.

كيف تعمل Debt Consolidation Calculator

The calculator first simulates clearing each existing debt at its minimum payment - slow and expensive on high-rate cards. Then it computes the EMI on a single new loan covering the total balance at the new rate. The difference in total interest, after accounting for the processing fee, is your saving.

Formula

OldInterest = Σ amortise(debtᵢ at rᵢ, minᵢ) ; NewInterest = NewEMI × n − TotalBalance + Fee

  • TotalBalanceSum of all current debt balances
  • NewEMIEMI on consolidation loan
  • FeeProcessing + GST + legal of new loan

كيف تصل Debt Consolidation Calculator إلى النتيجة

The calculator runs two parallel simulations. Path A: each existing debt continues at its current minimum payment, with amortization tracked monthly until all debts clear. Path B: a single consolidation loan covers the total outstanding balance at the new rate; existing debts are paid off in full from the consolidation proceeds, and the new EMI runs until the consolidation loan is cleared. Comparing total interest paid (and time to debt-free) under both paths reveals the consolidation savings.

Three factors determine whether consolidation pencils: the spread between weighted-average old rate and new consolidation rate (bigger is better), the absolute balance being consolidated (larger balances generate larger savings relative to fixed processing fees), and the new loan's tenure (matching or shorter than the path-A timeline gives the best savings; stretching tenure to lower EMI can sometimes erase the rate advantage).

Top-up home loans are a special consolidation case. Available against existing home equity at home-loan rates (typically 8.5-10%) plus a small premium - significantly cheaper than personal loans. But the security is your home, so default risk is property-loss risk. Use top-ups only when your income is stable and you're highly disciplined. For most situations, a plain unsecured personal loan is the safer consolidation vehicle.

Three credit cards, ₹3 lakh total balance, average 38% APR, paying minimums

At minimum-payment pace, total interest before clearance: ~₹2.4 lakh over 5+ years. Consolidation into a ₹3 lakh personal loan at 14% for 3 years: EMI ₹10,253, total interest ₹69,108. Savings: roughly ₹1.7 lakh, plus 2+ years faster clearance. Single EMI replaces three minimum-due chores. Massive win.

Small consolidation may not pencil

₹50,000 credit card balance at 36%, plus ₹30,000 BNPL at 24% - total ₹80,000. Consolidation loan at 16% for 18 months: EMI ₹5,053. With ₹4,000 processing fee + GST: total cost ~₹95,500. Continuing minimums for the same 18 months on existing debts: total cost ~₹98,000. Saving only ₹2,500 - marginal. The smaller balance is hard to save meaningfully on consolidation; better strategy may be aggressive direct repayment.

متى تستخدم Debt Consolidation Calculator

  • Anyone carrying multiple credit-card balances at 30%+ rates that they're paying only minimums on.
  • Borrowers with one or two high-rate personal loans plus card debt looking to consolidate into a single lower-rate loan.
  • Homeowners with sizeable home equity who can access a top-up loan at near-home-loan rates to wipe out unsecured high-rate debt.
  • Anyone whose monthly debt-servicing across multiple loans feels chaotic - consolidation often helps with mental clarity, not just math.

أخطاء ومزالق شائعة

  • Consolidating then running up the credit cards again. The single biggest failure pattern; behaviour change must accompany consolidation.
  • Stretching the new tenure too long to reduce EMI further. Extra interest can erase the rate-spread saving.
  • Forgetting processing fees and GST. On modest balances these can wipe out the saving.
  • Choosing fintech consolidation offers at 18-22% - barely better than the cards being consolidated.
  • Consolidating low-rate debt (home loans, education loans) along with high-rate. Pointless and harmful.
نصائح احترافية

استفد أكثر من هذه الأداة

  • Consolidate only the high-rate debts (cards, fintech, BNPL). Leave home and education loans alone.
  • After consolidation, freeze or close the consolidated cards. Reopen one or two for emergencies once you're 12 months debt-free.
  • Negotiate aggressively on the consolidation loan rate. Banks compete on this product especially if you have a salary account.
  • Aim for the shortest consolidation tenure your cash flow allows. Lower EMI is comfortable but expensive.

أسئلة شائعة

أسئلة حول Debt Consolidation Calculator

When does consolidation make sense?

When the new rate is significantly lower than the weighted average of old rates, AND you have the discipline to not run up the cards again. Without behaviour change, consolidation just resets the trap.

Personal loan or balance transfer for consolidation?

Personal loans (12-18%) are easier - get the cash, pay off cards, single EMI. Balance transfer cards offer 0% for 6-12 months but you must clear within the promo or rates spike. PL is more reliable for most people.

Should I consolidate my home loan with credit card debt?

Top-up loans on home equity are tempting because rates are 9-10% - vastly cheaper than card rates. But you risk your home if you default. Use only if your income is stable and discipline rock-solid.

Will consolidation hurt my credit score?

Short-term yes - closing cards reduces available credit and a new enquiry slightly dings the score. Long-term it improves the score by lowering credit utilisation and demonstrating disciplined repayment.

What about NBFC consolidation offers?

Compare carefully. Some NBFCs charge 18-22% - barely better than the cards. Others offer 13-15% with high fees. Always compute APR and total cost, not just the headline rate.

Can I consolidate just the high-rate debts?

Yes, and often the cleanest approach. Take a personal loan only large enough to clear the credit cards, leave the auto loan or home loan as-is.

Make confident money decisions

Indian financial products - home loans, fixed deposits, mutual funds, NPS, insurance - each carry their own quirks: monthly reducing balance vs flat-rate interest, quarterly vs monthly compounding, indexation on capital gains, the choice between the old and new tax regime. We design every finance calculator to use the formula that an Indian bank, AMC, or insurer would actually use, and to surface the assumptions in plain English so you can audit the result against your own statement.

Use this calculator alongside the EMI, SIP and inflation calculators to plan your money holistically. A standalone EMI number means little until you compare it with your in-hand salary, your existing debt-to-income ratio, and the impact of inflation on the real cost of the loan.
