فهم Ideal Weight Calculator

Ideal Body Weight (IBW) formulas were originally developed in clinical medicine - particularly for dosing weight-sensitive medications like anaesthesia agents and chemotherapy drugs - where a single weight number was needed rather than a healthy range. Over time they've crossed over into general fitness and health contexts as a quick goal-setting reference. This calculator shows all four major IBW formulas side-by-side because each makes slightly different assumptions about the height-weight relationship, and seeing the range gives you a more honest target than any single number.

The four classic formulas - Devine (1974, the clinical standard), Robinson (1983), Miller (1983) and Hamwi (1964) - were all derived from the same basic intuition: a baseline weight at 5 feet (152 cm) plus an increment per inch above. Where they differ is in the baseline values and increments. Devine has become the standard in clinical pharmacology; Hamwi tends to give the most generous numbers; Robinson and Miller are more conservative. The average across formulas typically lands within ±2 kg of the BMI 22 weight for the same height - a useful sanity check.

كيف تعمل Ideal Weight Calculator

Ideal Body Weight (IBW) formulas were originally created for medical dosing. They give a simple weight-for-height baseline using your height in inches over 5 feet. Most formulas agree closely; Hamwi and Devine give slightly higher estimates than Robinson and Miller.

Formula

Devine: Men 50 + 2.3·(in − 60); Women 45.5 + 2.3·(in − 60) Robinson: Men 52 + 1.9·(in − 60); Women 49 + 1.7·(in − 60) Miller: Men 56.2 + 1.41·(in − 60); Women 53.1 + 1.36·(in − 60) Hamwi: Men 48 + 2.7·(in − 60); Women 45.5 + 2.2·(in − 60)

كيف تصل Ideal Weight Calculator إلى النتيجة

All four formulas share the structure of a baseline weight at 5 feet + an increment for each additional inch of height. Devine for men: 50 + 2.3 × (inches − 60). Devine for women: 45.5 + 2.3 × (inches − 60). The other formulas use different baseline and increment values. Hamwi gives the most generous numbers (48 + 2.7 increment for men); Robinson and Miller use smaller increments (1.7-1.9 per inch). The differences accumulate at taller heights: at 6'0" (72 inches), Devine produces 77.6 kg for a male, while Robinson produces 74.8 kg - about 3 kg apart.

Frame size adjustment matters for clinical accuracy. The classic wrist-circumference test: wrap your thumb and middle finger around your opposite wrist. If they overlap, you have a small frame (subtract 10%); meet exactly, medium (no adjustment); don't meet, large frame (add 10%). For a 5'10" male with medium frame, Devine IBW is ≈ 73 kg; small frame ≈ 66 kg; large frame ≈ 80 kg. This is why a single 'ideal weight' number can mislead - actual healthy weight varies significantly with skeletal frame.

For modern fitness purposes, BMI-based healthy weight range is more useful than IBW. BMI 18.5-24.9 (global) or 18.5-22.9 (Asian-Indian) gives a range based on the same height. At 5'10" (1.78 m), healthy BMI range is 58.6 kg to 78.9 kg (global) or 58.6 kg to 72.5 kg (Indian) - a meaningful range that accommodates different body compositions and frame sizes. IBW formulas typically land in the middle of this range.

Male, 5'10" (178 cm, 70 inches)

Devine: 50 + 2.3 × 10 = 73 kg. Robinson: 52 + 1.9 × 10 = 71 kg. Miller: 56.2 + 1.41 × 10 = 70.3 kg. Hamwi: 48 + 2.7 × 10 = 75 kg. Average: 72.3 kg. Healthy BMI range at 178 cm: 58.6-78.9 kg (global), 58.6-72.5 kg (Indian). IBW average sits comfortably inside both ranges - a reasonable target.

Female, 5'4" (162 cm, 64 inches)

Devine: 45.5 + 2.3 × 4 = 54.7 kg. Robinson: 49 + 1.7 × 4 = 55.8 kg. Miller: 53.1 + 1.36 × 4 = 58.5 kg. Hamwi: 45.5 + 2.2 × 4 = 54.3 kg. Average: 55.8 kg. Healthy BMI range at 162 cm: 48.6-65.4 kg (global), 48.6-60.1 kg (Indian). IBW average lands centrally in the healthy range.

حالات الاستخدام

متى تستخدم Ideal Weight Calculator

  • Setting a long-term weight target after returning from injury, illness or pregnancy.
  • Adults at significantly higher or lower weight than their height suggests - IBW gives a directional target.
  • Medical contexts where weight-based dosing requires a single weight number rather than a range.
  • Fitness coaching where clients need a clear weight goal rather than a vague 'healthy range'.
  • Aviation, military and law enforcement standards where height-weight charts apply.

أخطاء ومزالق شائعة

  • Treating IBW as a precise target. It's a guideline, not a precise number - ±5 kg of variation around it is perfectly healthy.
  • Ignoring frame size. A small-frame and a large-frame person of identical height have meaningfully different healthy weights.
  • Using IBW for muscular athletes. Bodybuilders, rugby players, sprinters routinely exceed IBW without being unhealthy - body fat % is the better metric.
  • Setting IBW as a weight-loss target that requires extreme dieting. Healthy weight loss is 0.5-1 kg/week, not 5 kg/month.
  • Forgetting age. IBW formulas don't adjust for age, but mid-life and older adults can carry slightly higher weight healthily.

  • Use the average across all four formulas, not a single one. The average is more robust than any one estimate.
  • Always cross-check against the BMI healthy weight range for your height. IBW should fall comfortably inside.
  • Adjust for frame size (±10%) using the wrist-circumference test for a more individual target.
  • Don't pursue IBW if you have meaningful muscle mass. Body composition (waist circumference, body fat %) is the better metric.

أسئلة شائعة

أسئلة حول Ideal Weight Calculator

Which IBW formula is best?

Devine is the most widely used in clinical practice. Hamwi tends to be the most generous, Robinson and Miller more conservative. Use the average of all four as a balanced estimate.

Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?

No. IBW formulas give a single number. Healthy weight is a range - usually defined by BMI 18.5–24.9. The IBW value usually sits inside this range.

What if my IBW differs a lot from my current weight?

Don't aim to match it exactly. IBW is a guideline, not a target. Health markers like body fat %, waist size, blood pressure, and fitness level matter more than hitting a specific weight.

Do these formulas account for body frame size?

Most don't. Hamwi uniquely adjusts ±10% for small or large frame size. People with broader shoulders or larger bone structure may sit naturally above the standard IBW.

Are these formulas valid for athletes?

No. Athletes with high muscle mass usually weigh well above their IBW without being unhealthy. Use body fat % instead.

What is a small/medium/large frame?

A common test: wrap your thumb and middle finger around your wrist. If they overlap, you have a small frame; meet, medium; don't meet, large. Adjust IBW ±10%.

Track health metrics with care

Body composition, daily energy needs and pregnancy timelines all rest on formulas validated across millions of people, but no single number tells the whole story. The values from this calculator are point estimates with a known margin of error - body fat from skinfold or US Navy method has roughly a ±3% standard error compared to a DEXA scan, and BMR can vary ±10% person to person at the same height and weight. Use these numbers to track trends week over week, not to chase decimal precision day to day.

Pair this tool with the BMR, TDEE, calorie and macro calculators to turn a single measurement into an actionable plan. None of these tools are a substitute for a qualified doctor, registered dietitian or certified strength coach - but they remove the busywork so you spend more time on training and recovery, less on math.
