فهم Electricity Bill Calculator

Electricity bills in India are notoriously complex, varying by state, DISCOM, slab tier, fuel adjustment surcharge, electricity duty, and even season (summer rates are higher in some states). For a typical Indian household running an AC, geyser, refrigerator, washing machine, lights and fans, the monthly bill can easily swing from ₹1,500 in winter to ₹6,000+ in peak summer. Understanding what's driving your bill - and how each appliance contributes - is the first step to keeping costs under control. This calculator handles slab-wise billing across major DISCOMs including MSEDCL (Maharashtra), BESCOM (Karnataka), TNEB (Tamil Nadu), BSES/Tata (Delhi), UPPCL (UP), Adani/DGVCL (Gujarat), WBSEDCL (West Bengal), TSSPDCL (Telangana), and KSEB (Kerala).

Beyond just predicting your bill, the appliance load builder helps identify which devices are eating the most electricity. A 1.5-ton 3-star AC running 8 hours a day in Mumbai (~250 kWh/month) can cost ₹2,500-₹4,000 depending on slab. A geyser used twice daily (15 minutes per use) might add 60-90 kWh. An old refrigerator can silently consume 50 kWh more than a new 5-star unit. The calculator lets you simulate before-and-after scenarios so you can make informed decisions about upgrades, usage patterns, and whether installing a solar rooftop system makes financial sense for your bill profile.

كيف تعمل Electricity Bill Calculator

Indian residential electricity bills are computed in slabs - each tier of units consumed is priced at a different rate. Most DISCOMs (MSEDCL, BESCOM, BSES, TNEB, UPPCL, DGVCL, WBSEDCL) follow this slab logic. On top of slab energy charges, your bill adds a fixed charge per connection, a fuel adjustment surcharge per unit, and an electricity duty (a percentage of the subtotal). Domestic supply is exempt from GST in India. The calculator stitches all of this into a clear monthly total.

Formula

Bill = Σ(slab units × slab rate) + Fixed charge + Fuel surcharge × units + Duty% × subtotal

  • Slab unitsUnits that fall inside each slab tier
  • Slab rate₹/kWh for that slab as per DISCOM tariff order
  • Fixed chargePer-connection charge that does not depend on units
  • Fuel surchargePass-through paise per unit charged separately
  • Duty%State electricity duty applied on the subtotal

كيف تصل Electricity Bill Calculator إلى النتيجة

Slab-wise billing means each tier of consumption is priced separately. In Maharashtra (MSEDCL 2024), for instance: first 100 units at ₹4.71, next 200 at ₹10.29, next 200 at ₹14.55, above 500 at ₹16.64 per unit. So a household using 350 units doesn't pay 350 × the highest rate - they pay 100 × ₹4.71 + 200 × ₹10.29 + 50 × ₹14.55. The calculator shows this slab-by-slab breakdown so you understand exactly how each unit adds up.

On top of slab energy charges, several other components add to the bill: Fixed charges (₹50-₹150 per connection per month, independent of usage), Fuel Adjustment Charge or FAC (paise per unit, pass-through from fuel costs to power plants, can be positive or negative and changes monthly), Electricity Duty (state government tax, typically 6-16% of energy charge), Meter rent (₹10-₹50 for some meter types), and occasionally Wheeling/Transmission charges. Domestic connections are exempt from GST.

Appliance contribution estimation: each appliance has a power rating in watts. Daily energy in kWh = (watts × hours used) ÷ 1000. Monthly = daily × 30. For 1.5-ton AC at 1500W running 8 hrs/day: (1500 × 8) ÷ 1000 = 12 kWh/day × 30 = 360 kWh/month. Note that AC inverter models cycle on/off and actual consumption is 30-40% lower than nameplate × hours. The calculator uses realistic effective consumption factors for accurate estimates.

أخطاء ومزالق شائعة

  • Treating the highest slab rate as the average rate. Slabs are progressive - early units are much cheaper.
  • Ignoring fixed charges, FAC, and duty. These can add 20-30% on top of energy charges.
  • Assuming AC runs at nameplate consumption continuously. Inverter ACs cycle and actual consumption is 30-40% lower.
  • Forgetting that geyser, induction cooktop and microwave have very high wattage but short use durations.
  • Not accounting for meter reading dates - bills cover ~30-32 day cycles, not calendar months.

أسئلة شائعة

أسئلة حول Electricity Bill Calculator

Why is my actual bill higher than the calculator estimate?

Tariffs change after every tariff order, and your DISCOM may add meter rent, government cess or arrears. Use this tool as a planning estimate, not a legal substitute for the printed bill.

How do I read units consumed?

Subtract last month's meter reading from the current reading. The difference, in kWh, is the units used. Most online portals and the printed bill show this number directly.

Why does Tamil Nadu show 0 for the first 100 units?

TNEB provides a free quota for the first 100 units for residential consumers. Above that, slab rates apply. The slab is shown for transparency.

Are AC and geyser the biggest contributors?

Yes, in most homes. A 1.5-ton AC running 6 hours a day adds ~250 kWh per month, easily ₹2,000-₹4,000 depending on the slab. The appliance builder makes this clear.

Does the calculator work for commercial connections?

It is tuned for domestic LT connections. Commercial, industrial and agricultural tariffs differ significantly and need a separate slab table.

Is GST applied?

No, domestic electricity is exempt from GST in India. Only fixed charge, energy charge, fuel surcharge and electricity duty are charged.

Plan home projects without overshooting

Renovating, decorating or estimating utilities at home almost always reduces to three numbers - area, volume, and cost. Get any of them wrong by 10% and you're either short of paint and tile, or you've over-ordered and have to return material. This calculator uses the same wastage allowances, packing rules and unit conversions that contractors and material suppliers actually use in India.

Use it together with the paint, tile, electricity bill and BTU calculators to plan a complete renovation budget. Indian states have very different electricity tariffs and material prices, so the calculators expose state-wise tariffs (Maharashtra MSEDCL, Tamil Nadu TANGEDCO, Delhi BSES, Karnataka BESCOM, etc.) and let you override defaults to match your supplier's pricing.
